Empress Toadlily. This is a particularly vigorous Toadlily with a white background and deep purple speckles scattered over the entire 1.5 inch flowers, produced in terminal clusters of 8-14 flowers. We have fallen in love with this selection because it holds its foliage so well late into the season, where other selections tend to become shop-worn in appearance and very untidy late in the season when flowers start to appear. Empress' is thought to be a hybrid between T. hirta and T. formosana. It can easily reach 2-2.5 ft. in height with an equal spread. Tricyrtis tend to be happiest in filtered sun and well drained soil with moderate moisture. They multiply quite well and can be easily divided when dormant, but stems can also be rooted during the growing season. The pictures are courtesy of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
