RARE. This rare and little known Pittosporum species that was collected in Hubei Province, China by Scott McMahan, Ozzie Johnson and Dan Hinkley on one of their collecting excursions in 2014. It has handsome foliage with entire margin leaves larger than a Camellia japonica. It is quite vigorous and appears to be a good zone 7 plant at least. When grown at the  Gainesville, GA campus of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, it survived unscathed during the polar vortex of Christmas, 2022 in a rather exposed location. It is also growing at the National Arboretum. We are anxiously awaiting its first flowering for us, but Stefan Lura who is the plant records botanist at the U. S. National Arboretum has pictures of it flowering and fruiting there. After much examination and comparing with other species, Stefan has concluded that this selection is Pittosporum daphniphylliodes var. adaphniphylloides. This is the mainland variety which is possibly more cold hardy than the typical Taiwanese var. daphniphylloides. It appears to be a more compact grower than the species that we are offering. So we are going with this identification for now. I would suggest full sun to part shade for siting in the garden with good drainage. I am suspecting it to be a 8-12 ft. specimen in ten or so years. The first, second, fourth and fifth pictures are courtesy of Stefan Lura.
