Charity Hybrid Mahonia. This cultivar is slightly more compact than 'Arthur Menzies', with leaves being shorter, to 21" long and leaflets slightly smaller. Flowers are just as spectacular as the above, with the same outstanding berry display. Another great plant for shade, as a mass planting or as an accent. These plants can reach heights of up to 15', but they can be kept in the 4 to 6' range with select removal of old canes on an annual or biannual basis. There are no better winter flowering plants than the hybrid Mahonias. Most of them flower for us from Thanksgiving to the end of January. Morning temperatures in the teens don't faze the flowers. All have attractive blue berries following the flowering.
