Beijing Beauty™ Mahonia. We are not quite sure of the origin of this particular selection, but it came from Mr. Yamaguchi who lives in the Gifu Prefecture in south central Japan. He does a lot of collecting in China. This is a selection that he made from a number of seedlings. And Mr. Yamaguchi is one of the first two Japanese nurserymen who visited us here at Nurseries Caroliniana. This cultivar is a very compact grower and puts on a good display of fall yellow flower on 4-6" racemes. After the two coldest winters that we have had on record, this was the best looking Mahonia of all the selections that we grow. Every customer that saw it commented on how good it looked. Many times Mahonia fortunei will be damaged by cold even in zones 7b, but if one is interested in this same appearance, then this is an excellent substitute. It will tolerate morning sun and afternoon shade or filtered sun.
