Japanese Ligustrum or Japanese Privet. This is one of the finest hedge plants in existence within its range of zones 7-10. It makes a dense dark green barrier rather quickly. It shears well, but to keep it tidy, one may need to shear it several times during the growing season. Its ultimate size is 10-15' with an equal spread. It is very popular as a small specimen multi-trunked tree. It's bark is a smooth gray. Being in the olive family, Oleaceae, it is a close relative of lilac where it forms terminal panicles of white flowers. These are often overlooked as they are often sheared off when pruning. The only drawback is that it will attract white flies, but it is vigorous enough to overcome these.
