South African Scilla. This little South African bulb makes a very attractive low groundcover from spring to fall. One can use it in a rock garden or with succulents for foliage interest. It has upright, narrow, olive-green leaves with dark purple striping . It grows to a colony with a 1 ft spread in 5 years. In early spring, the clumps are adorned with tiny pink, Scilla-like spikes in early April. If one lives in a zone too cold to grow it outside, it makes a wonderful small container subject, and when grown indoors, it will remain evergreen. Divides easily.
