Woodlander's Ruby Anise Shrub. This selection was introduced by Woodlanders of Aiken, SC, and is a cross between Illicium mexicana and a white flowering form of I. floridanum. The flowers are larger than either parent and make an outstanding show with their ruby pink flowers which hang from the tips of 4" pedicels and the typical star-like shape of both parents. The leaves are slightly larger than either parent also. An incredible plant that will reach 6-8' and does well in filtered sun. It is tolerant of many soil types as long as it is not sitting in water. We have found it to flower in the fall like one of its parents I. mexicana and then again in the spring. The flowers pictured in the photos were taken during the week of Thanksgiving.
