Winter Red Winterberry. Dr. Michael Dirr said that this cultivar holds the color of its berries longer than any other selection at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens. We had berries well into April, even after the new season's growth had begun. It will eventually reach 10' in height. 'Southern Gentleman' is the best male pollinator. The deciduous hollies do well in full sun to part shade, and they are not particular as to soil, as long as they are not standing in water. But Dirr points out in his Manual of Woody Landscape Plants that he has observed plants with 4" trunks actually growing in water.
