Due to the recent discovery of the spotted lanternfly in South Carolina, California has restricted the shipment of plants from SC as well as 15 other states in which the spotted lanternfly had already been found. It was found over 100 miles from Nurseries Caroliniana, but the whole state has been put under quarantine until a treatment protocol can be worked out to resume shipments to California. Authorities hope that this can be accomplished by the end of the month.

Hybrid Holly. This mysterious little holly is a fascinating hybrid between Ilex dimorphophylla (Okinawan Holly) and Ilex cornuta (Chinese Holly) and was given to me by Sean Hogan of Cistus Nursery in Portland, Oregon. Okinawan Holly is native to the Ryuku Islands, south of Japan and is not very cold-hardy. But this hybrid has the hardiness of Chinese Holly, to zone 6. When old enough to flower, it produces a magnificent crop of red berries, as it is a female clone. It is excellent as a hedge where one doesn't want a huge plant. My guess is that it will get to 8-10 ft. Give it full sun to part shade. It is a rapid grower when young. This selection really needs a good cultivar name.
