Mariesii Variegated Hydrangea. This is an old variegated form of a lacecap selection. It is probably planted more for its foliage than for its flowers. The lacecap inflorescence has white sterile florets with mauvish true flowers, and when in bloom, the flowers are almost lost in the variegated foliage. The leaves have wide irregular white margins with several shades of pewter-green throughout the center to its leaves. If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering as the plant will have time to put on new growth set flower buds for the following spring. So that flowering is not affected, try to prune at or before early August.
