Sunshine Superstar Amaryllis. This extremely vigorous Amaryllis was developed by Barry Glick of Sunshine Farm and Gardens in West Virginia. It is a rather rapid divider for an Amaryllis, and it will also flower at 24-48 inches high. One will get the best flower production when grown in more sun, preferably at least half a day. The overall color is white with red streaking radiating out from the center. In areas where it is too cold to grow outside in the ground, it does equally well as a pot plant, treating it as all other container grown Amaryllis. When planting in the ground, remember to plant it with the "neck" of the bulb above the soil line. It likes to be shallow, but in its northern range, it might be advisable to mulch it with pine bark or pine straw. We overwinter our plants in a cold frame which we keep just above freezing, and we don't cut back the foliage, but they still flower profusely in the spring when the days start getting longer, So, it doesn't necessarily need cutting back for winter dormancy, but if one wants it flowering earlier for the holidays, one may need to prune back the foliage in late summer and keep it in a dark dry place. Then bring it out around Thanksgiving and give it water and light. Outside, one should have soil with excellent drainage. I fertilize with a balanced fertilizer, and lime it liberally once a year. This holds true with any bulbs with a South African heritage since they are native to limestone mountains which erode to limestone valleys. And of course, Amaryllis are South African natives.
