Blue Leaf Isu. If you are tired of those little "green meatballs" that every pickup truck landscaper plants around every new home in town, then this is the plant for you. A spreading flat-topped shrub with narrow,  willow-like, evergreen leaves which take on a bluish caste, and it breaks the monotony of those little green soldiers planted ad nauseam in almost every foundation planting. It is in the Witchhazel family as Loropetalum and has small, burgundy-red, witchhazel-like flowers occurring in February at every leaf node of last year's growth, adding to its interest. This is a relatively new introduction from China, and it appears that it can be easily maintained under 3' in height with twice that spread with a minimum of pruning. There are few new plants that we grow which have received as much positive response from our customers as this plant. Many use it as a substitute for Otto Luyken Laurel because it doesn't have the disease problems associated with the English Laurels. We are not sure of its cold hardiness either, but at least Zones 7-9, maybe even zone 6. Full sun gives the most attractive compact growth habit, but it does quite well in some shade.
