Cryptomeria japonica 'Pompom'

Regular price $35.00 Sale

Pom Pom Japanese Cedar. We took cuttings of this Japanese Cedar from the J. C. Raulston Arboretum at NCSU, Raleigh, NC. It is definitely a miniature of the species with twiggy, lax branches and tiny needles and medium green color. The form is not tight, but it has an overall soft appearance. It is said to mature at 8 ft., but I think it will eventually get somewhat larger. As a young specimen, it has a rounded form, which eventually takes on a central leader. My description would be a large shrub to a small tree. The American Conifer Society comments, "An interesting and attractive feature is how the terminals will naturally cluster forming the "pom poms" that give this plant its fanciful name." It also comments that one can expect 2 in. of growth a year with an ultimate height of 2 ft. in 10 years, but our rate in infinitely more, with 3-5 in. of growth in a season. This may be due to our hot and humid nights which we experience here in the Deep South of the U.S. I have seen this many times on plants that we have introduced from Japan. We introduced a "dwarf" Loropetalum, 'Daruma', which we had never seen over 30 in. tall in Japan. I planted several in my older brother's garden, and in three years, they were over 8 ft. tall. There is no available information on the origins of 'Pompom', but if you have any information, we would be delighted to know.
