Cucumbertree Magnolia. This outstanding native magnolia is best known for its greenish-yellow flowers from which most of our yellow flowering magnolia varieties have been developed. Even though mature trees may reach 50 to 80 feet in height, as a young tree, it takes on a compact pyramidal shape, but as it ages, its width may match its height. It grows well in full sun to part shade with adequate moisture, but does not like a wet site. Its leaves are coarse, 10 inches long by 4 inches wide, with a soft pubescence underneath. The record national tree was located in Augusta, GA, even though it was not recorded as such at the corner of Walton Way and Millidge Road, but fell in the late summer of 2012. Roy Simkins measured this plant after it fell to determine that it was the national champion tree. It was amazing that it had a hollow trunk for much of its lower trunk. We have seedlings grown from seed which were collected from this plant. Photos are courtesy of the Missouri Botanical Garden, www.missouribotanicalgarden.org.
