Cardinal Flower. This Eastern U. S. NATIVE was introduced into Europe in the 1620's and became so incredibly popular with its brilliant red flowers that were the color of the Catholic Church's Cardinal's vestures that it came to be called "Cardinal flower." Its natural habitat is wet areas such as stream and pond banks, but will do equally well in well drained areas as long as it gets adequate moisture. In a suitable environment, it will even re-seed and can be easily propagated by seed, cuttings or division of clumps. This is absolutely one of our best native perennials with its incredibly long blooming period from May to October whose flower spikes also make excellent cut flowers as they start flowering from the bottom to the top. It is also a favorite of Hummingbirds. North Creek Nurseries says: "The root was part of a Native American love potion and the powder of the entire plant may have been used as sort of a magic power to dispel storms and was used in ceremonies."
