Tama-no-Ura Camellia. The "Tama" family of Camellia japonica are always some of the most eye-catching cultivars of the species with their distinct white borders to their petals. This particular selection was discovered in the wild by Tomokazu Fujita in Japan on Fuku'e Island, Gotô Archipelago, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1947. 'Tama-no-Ura' is a single flower of red with a border of white on each petal. The width of the border may vary from plant to plant, but each flower has a cylinder of bright yellow stamens in the center. It is an early to mid season bloomer with an upright to open form, but as a plant ages, it will take on a cascading or weeping form. The second picture is courtesy of Mike Chelednik.
