Sweetshrub or Carolina Allspice. One of our more popular native shrubs which is planted for its deep burgundy, spicy, fragrant flowers in spring. It develops into a suckering mound of 5-6'. It has good yellow fall color. It does well in shade to sun. One needs to be observant because every clone is not fragrant. As a kid when I hiked through the woods here on our family farm, I knew where some stands were much more fragrant than others. This is one of our best selling plants at the S. C. Farmers Market Spring Festival. Those buying it usually comment that their grandmother always had one of these growing in her garden.
