Aquinas Pink Bottlebrush. Joe LeVert who is the horticulture instructor at Aquinas High School in Augusta, GA, shared this plant with me, he told me that it had lavender flowers, but after seeing it bloom, I chose to call it 'Aquinas Pink' rather than lavender. But it really is a lavender-pink. When we find new selections like this, we really don't know their origins, because so often they are seedlings which have been cross pollinated with another species either in a nursery or botanical garden setting. But this plant has proven to be exceptionally cold hardy, surviving in a full exposure with no protection to the mid teens in a one gallon container. As with most in this genus, one should grow it in full sun with good drainage. The parent plant was thriving planted in almost pure white sand with very little fertilizer. Its ultimate size looks like it will be 6-8' with an almost equal spread.
