Alphonse Karr Clump Bamboo. Alphonse Karr is one of the better variegated cane (culm) bamboos. It grows in a 14-16’ high clump with culms of bright yellow and green stripes. It is a "clumping" bamboo rather than a "running" type, which makes it excellent for screen or even for containers. Its foliage may burn in the low teens, but new leaves will be produced the following spring. This is a great container plant as well with its incredibly colorful culms. It does well in sun or shade. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and we have never had problems with deer on any of our bamboos, which are technically giant grasses. They are in the grass family, Gramineae.
