Hosoba Hoshifu Aucuba. This is a compact variegated female selection which produces an excellent crop of berries when a male pollinator is nearby. Aucubas are bee pollinated, so insects must be encouraged in the garden in early spring when it flowers, which is before the leaves flush. Its mature size will be one step up from 'Fructo-Albo,' and the leaves are somewhat narrower as well as one can see from the photos. As with all Aucubas, they must be grown in good shade. Deciduous shade works well, because when the trees shed in winter, the sun is not bright enough to do damage to the leaves of Aucubas. Aucubas also appreciate uniformly moist soil, but with excellent drainage.
