Coralberry. This Japanese species is highly prized in some places, but may be considered a weed in others. In in its native Japan, there are numerous shows displaying the many cultivars of this species. Where it is grown as an ornamental species it works as a striking accent with its brilliant red berries. It works equally well as a container plant, but when temperatures drop below 20°F, it would be best to give it some protection. It does best when grown in filtered sun or shade. Please bear in mind that this species has been put on the "Invasive Plant List" in Florida. It is speculated that birds carry the seed about, spreading it far afield. I frankly think that this theory is somewhat overblown, because for some reason, birds leave our berries alone. Hence, I have only seen them falling to the ground and germinating just under the parent and not spread far afield.
