Fall-flowering Kii Garlic. I first saw this small "onion/garlic" in a small consignment nursery in Kawaguchi-shi, just outside of Tokyo, Japan. It flowers in October-November at approximately 3-4" high with outfacing magenta pink flowers with fine, almost hair-like green leaves to 6" tall. At first sight I thought that it was a very dwarf Allium thunbergii 'Ozawa,' but now I know it to be a species type. In its native Japan, it is endangered and is found on the Kii peninsula and surrounding Gifu, Aichi, and Yamaguchi prefectures in Southern Japan. It is a superb rock garden subject growing in part to full sun with good drainage. The pictures below are in the little nursery from where I purchased it.
