Due to the recent discovery of the spotted lanternfly in South Carolina, California has restricted the shipment of plants from SC as well as 15 other states in which the spotted lanternfly had already been found. It was found over 100 miles from Nurseries Caroliniana, but the whole state has been put under quarantine until a treatment protocol can be worked out to resume shipments to California. Authorities hope that this can be accomplished by the end of the month.

Swift Creek Variegated Privet. This Variegated Privet was introduced by Lanny Thomas of Swift Creek Nursery in Clayton, NC and appears to be the best selection of this plant that we have found. It holds it variegation better without reverting to green as so many clones tend to do. The species of this plant, Ligustrum sinensis, is an invasive weed throughout eastern North America, where birds have spread it far and wide from eating its small fruit. Of course the famous "hedge" at the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium is this noxious weed. When a group of Japanese nurseryman visited here some years ago, they noticed this plant in the sales yard and it seems like everyone of them bought a plant. We could not believe that they were not familiar with it since it is an Asian native. It is best gown in sun and will get quite large, but it can be pruned or sheared to keep it much more tidy.
