Annabelle Hydrangea. This selection of our native mountain hydrangea can produce a huge white inflorescence up to 1' across. It was first promoted by the University of Illinois professor, J.C. McDaniel. It is a spreading, suckering plant and is probably best pruned back heavily during the winter since it flowers on current seasons growth the next spring and summer. By dead-heading the June blooms will usually induce a second late summer flush of flowering. Keep it in the shade in the deep South with uniform moisture. This is definitely one of the most popular cultivars of one of America's native species.
