Confederate Rose. This plant is hardly native to the Confederacy. Actually it comes to us from China, but the late flowering double forms of this plant which is so popular in the Deep South, are seen on every other city block and most of the old farms. It flowers so late, October to November, that it can actually be hurt by the early frosts, but it can still reach a height of 10' before it blooms. Its flowers are about 6-8" across and are so double that it resembles an over-sized Carnation. But what characterizes this selection is that its flowers open white and within a day turn a rich pink. Flowers generally last about 3 days, but since bud set is so heavy, there is always a preponderance of blooms.
