Blue Mist Fothergilla. This native species is one of our superb native shrubs with its fragrant powderpuff flowers in spring and its glaucous blue foliage during the spring and summer. It is native to the Carolinas, in addition to TN, GA, FL, AL and MS. There have been a number a number of cultivars selected from this species of which this is one of the nicer with its outstanding blue foliage, particularly on its newer leaves. The fall color is not as spectacular as the species, but the blue foliage makes up for this. This is truly one of our outstanding native gems. Since its most southern range is in coastal South Carolina and northern Florida, this is a good zone 9 plant. It does well in full sun to part shade in well drained soil.
