Angyo Star Tree Ivy. This is by far the best variegated form of this genus that I have ever seen. I found this cultivar in a garden center in Angyo, Japan, near Tokyo. Each leaf has a dramatic broad white margin which makes a striking accent in the shade garden. I have one other cultivar of this plant which has narrow white margins, but none are as dramatic as this one. We were the first to offer this selection in the U.S. As a matter of fact, it had no cultivar name when I purchased it in Japan, so I gave it the name 'Angyo Star.' Angyo is the nursery district around Tokyo. It also works great as a container or house plant. The parent is a cross between English Ivy, Hedera helix, and the well known shade shrub Fatsia japonica. The original hybrid was found in a garden in Nantes, France in 1910. It has the same 'viney' growth habit of the species which must be supported to get any height at all. It is happiest when grown in shade to filtered sun. Unfortunately, deer love it.
