Okame Flowering Cherry. This awesome flowering Cherry is a hybrid between Prunus incisa, the hardy Fuji Cherry, and Prunus campanulata, the tender Formosan Cherry. For us here in zone 8 it will come into full flower in February and a late frost doesn't tend to harm its blooms. Its dense branching is covered with deep pink flowers which are so numerous that one can hardly see through it. It is reported that it will reach 25-30', but it seems to stay with a smaller statue here in the South. This cultivar was introduced to American by the Morris Arboretum in 1940. Further north it is reported to have a good golden yellow fall color, but for us it is not so exciting.
