Siberian or Russian Cypress. This quaint conifer is one of the few that does well in sun or shade. It has a feathery spreading habit reaching only 20" high but with a spread over 6-8'. The prerequisite for growing this species is that it have EXCELLENT drainage, especially in the Deep South. It will succumb to root rot if not given a well drained site. A sloping area that readily sheds water is ideal. But one is always surprised to see a conifer growing in rather heavy shade. Contrasts beautifully with coarse textured perennials such as Hostas. And is not nearly so stiff as many ground cover Junipers are.
