Henry Anise Shrub. This species has bright pink 1" flowers covering this shade-loving shrub in spring with its dark green 3-5" long entire margin, lance-shaped leaves. Initially it will take on a broad pyramidal shape as it ages, but then it will tend to spread out. This Illicium will probably tolerate more shade than any others of this genus. And it is deer resistant as well. This is a great woodland plant, but in the upper reaches of its range, some have had great success growing this species in full sun. It is not particular as to soil as long as it has good drainage and adequate moisture. I would consider this a 6-8' shrub, but some old plants have reached 15'.
