Alva Lusterleaf Holly. I truly believe this to be the most majestic of all hollies with its large lustrous leaves to 8" long. It is also quite cold hardy and performs well in sun or shade. After growing many seedlings of this species, we had begun to make some selections of a good female whose berries would color up early. This is one that was planted at my older brother Alva's home and it turned out to be the best that we have seen. Not only does in set a heavy crop of berries, but it also begins to color up in October with bright red berries as one can see in the photos. This the actual plant from which our cuttings were taken.
