'Dharuma' is the most compact of the "paniculata" types, and it also has the unusual characteristic with this species of flowering on old wood. I have seen a plant covered in white panicles being only 24" tall by 3' across in late May. This is a winner!!! Don't prune this plant like other Hydrangea paniculatas. Prune it after it flowers rather than before. But it still does well in full sun like the species but also does quite well in part shade. The first photos are plants grown under high pine shade. They have not only maintained their compact habit, but they flowered just as well as those grown in full sun. As its flowers age, they will turn a pleasant pink as seen in the last photos.
