Spring Purple Corylopsis. Like other Corylopsis species, this one makes a large open shrub with 2-3" hanging racemes of yellow fragrant flowers in the spring before the foliage. Here in zone 8 ours will start flowering in late February and continue through March. But this cultivar has an added bonus of matt purple new growth. Not only with the early spring flush, but each succeeding flush of growth has the purple tips, which is a magnificent added bonus for this genus. Fall colors may be purple to yellows. Corylopsis make incredible woodland plants where they thrive under the filtered shade of deciduous trees, but they will also grow with morning sun and afternoon shade. They are long lived plants and each year become more and more impressive.
