Fukurin-Ikkyu Camellia. "Fukurin" in Japanese alludes to a marginal variegation, and as one can see in the pictures, this cultivar has a very distinct yellow margin to its small to medium size leaves. The small flowers are a captivating double with pink towards the center and fading to pale pink or white towards the tips. It is a compact plant, keeping with its small leaves and flowers. I found this selection in Japan and my first attempts to bring it back failed with the loss of the plants, but finally I got it to survive. A Camellia friend, Chip Buchanan, grafted two scions on an old plant in his garden and the results were dramatic the first year with an incredible growth rate. These plants are rooted cuttings on their own roots.
