Athens Sweetshrub. This selection of our native Sweetshrub has some of the more fragrant flowers of the genus. There have been a number of yellow flowering selections found, but this one has gained popularity because of its fragrance, the best in May when it is in full flower. I don't have the best "smeller" but I have noticed its fragrance at over 200' away on a warm May evening when the atmosphere was heavy. After loading one customers plants in the back of his small trailer and then moving to another part of the nursery to load other plants, we were almost overwhelmed by the pungent fragrance when we opened his trailer door again. Happiest in filtered sun to part shade, and it is not particular as to soil as long as it is well drained.
