Pink Peacock Ardisia. This is without a doubt the most spectacular cultivar of this species. When I first saw it in Japan, it looked surreal. The leaves are a deep burgundy, highlighted with fluorescent pink. I have grown this cultivar in my garden for a number of years and it has proven cold hardy for me until we hit the low teens and 40 mph winds. Then it was killed to the ground, but re-sprouted. As with the species, one must grow this selection in the shade. It has the same showy red berries of the species, and amazingly, it comes true from seed, as do most cultivars of Ardisia crenata and A. crispa. Most other variegated forms that I have seen in Japan were sold as seedlings with no cultivar name.
