Splendid Mexican Agave. This Agave species is native to the mountains of Mexico and is a wonderful size for the residential landscape, as it gets to only about 20". It spreads by underground rhizomes, so it will eventually make an impenetrable mass. The light greenish-yellow center streak adds an air of sophistication. One of its best assets is its cold hardiness taking temperatures below 0°F with little damage. It does quite well with a fair amount of shade as long as it has good drainage. And Agaves respond surprisingly to adequate water, increasing their growth dramatically. It lends itself well as a container subject also, especially when one wants to take a vacation in the summer and you don't want to have to depend on your neighbors kid to water. The second picture is of the species Agave lophantha.
