Fort McNair Buckeye. This species is a cross between our native Aesculus pavia and the European species, Aesculus hippocastanum and the cross is thought to have occurred in Germany. It is one of the most popular trees in Europe. But this incredible medium size tree is a selection found on the grounds of Ft. McNair in Washington, D. C. It has a straighter growing trunk than 'Briottii', but the flower color is not that much different. It is a good pink with a yellow throat. It flowers in upright terminal panicles in April for us here in zone 8. This plant is extremely attractive and makes a great small to medium size tree. These plants that we offer are grafted.
