Sango Kaku Japanese Maple. The cultivar name 'Sango Kaku' means "Coral Tower" in Japanese, and it is grown for its intense red-pink stem color during the winter. It is a rather fast growing upright form which can reach a height of over 20' and will begin to broaden with age. The stems are very fine and twiggy. The leaves are a medium green with the typical "palmatum" form which turn a beautiful golden-yellow in the fall. When situating this tree in the landscape, one should be careful not to place it with a red brick wall as a background, because it will not show the red stems off to good advantage, but rather a dark green or lighter colored setting. All of these are grown from cuttings or air layers, so that they are on there own roots, and they are ideal for bonsai since they don't show an obvious graft union.
