Queen of White Thread Century Plant (syn. Agave filifera 'Compacta Marginata'). Little is known of the origin of this true "Queen" of the Agave world, but it is most likely a Japanese selection because the cultivar name is Japanese. Compared to better known species of Agaves, this plant is diminutive, reaching only 1' tall by 18" across. In the past, it was mostly found in private Agave collections, but with the introduction of the practice of tissue culture, this has made the availability of such rare plants obtainable by us paupers. This plant is hardy from zone 8 south, but in colder climes it makes a magnificent container subject for year round enjoyment. The leaves have distinctive ivory white margins on either side of a dark green center, with leaf edges adorned with curly white hairs for the full length of the leaf. This species does not normally produce off-sets, but I will never say, "never" since I have seen one of ours fill its pot with off-shoots. These are particularly nice specimens with a 10-12" spread in a full gallon container. We may have to put these plants in larger boxes to prevent breaking the tips of the leaves from being broken.
