David's Red Flowering Maple. Of course this is not a maple, but the leaf just remotely resembles the shape of some maple species. This Hibiscus cousin has a flower similar in size to 'Voodoo' with a brighter red flower which carries farther than 'Voodoo'. The color is more of an orange-red, and it is a large rapid grower, and here in zone 8 it has proven perennial. We would love to hear from gardeners who have grown it in colder climates to see how cold-hardy it really is. I would suggest mulching the base of ones plant for better winter protection. Grow it in full to part sun for best flower production. Give it good drainage but uniform moisture.
