Incense Passion Vine. The genus name of Passiflora comes from the Latin "passio", which means "passion" and of course "flora", meaning "flower". This is why it is called Passion Flower. It is a fast growing vine which kills to the ground each winter, but is ground hardy to areas with a low of 0°F, but even here I would recommend mulching it heavily. There are some 400 species of this genus mainly native in tropical and subtropical areas. Grow it in a good well-drained soil with moderate moisture, but once established it is quite drought tolerant. It climbs by tendrils, hence a wire fence or even a loose shrub will be ideal to support it. Egg-shaped edible green fruit will develop when petals drop, so there is more than just a visual reward. If one is in a climate where your Passion Flower won't survive the winter outside, they make an excellent container subject. But just remember, overwinter your container inside where it is a least doesn't freeze and keep it lightly moist to dry.
