Swamp Cyrilla or Titi. This is one of our more neglected native shrubs of exceptional character which flowers in late spring on 3-6" long racemes and will reach 15-20' in height. In its native habitats it grows in low damp areas, but it can be found on high and dry sites as well, and it is just as happy there. In the fall, half of its leaves turn spectacular shades of yellow, apricot and orange with the others remaining evergreen. This is one plant where I think that the seed pods are just as showy as the flowers. Another great trait of this species is its slightly contorted growth habit, which makes it quite a specimen in the landscape. Plant in part to full sun. I have seen it growing along waters edge with half of its roots submerged and it is thriving.
