Nagoya Stars Aspidistra. I found this Aspidistra in a small nursery just outside of Nagoya, Japan. For a number of years we did not know the species, but thanks to Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery, it has now been identified as A. oblancifolia. The owner didn't seem to be too attached to it because is was located under one of his benches, in a very over-crowded greenhouse. It has proven quite vigorous, multiplying quite rapidly, but the best quality of this selection is its cold hardiness. Even in the mid-teens with high winds, we have had no leaf burn. The narrow leaves of 1.5" to 2.5" wide will reach to 30" and are liberally spotted with cream-white dots and dashes. I had sent this selection to several experts and Tony's flowered first, giving the opportunity to have it correctly identified. And it is also one of the most prolific flowering Aspidistras that I have ever seen. The soil will be literally covered with small purplish-pink star-like flowers. As with all Aspidistras, grow in good shade. These plants are very full 3 quart pots.
