Okame or Variegated Aspidistra. This selection is one of the oldest known cultivars of this species and has dramatic and bold white, cream and green striped leaves with every leaf showing a different pattern. This selection has extremely large leaves, up to 30" tall. It is not the most stable variety, but it is well worth growing for its theatrical statement in the shade garden. One will need to periodically remove leaves that revert to green. But, I simply divide these off and put them in my all green Aspidistra bed, after which many of these will revert to variegated foliage. This selection makes a dramatic indoor pot plant as well, surviving in low-light areas similar to where one would grow Sansieveria or Mother-in-laws Tongu.
