Millenium Flowering Onion. This plant has just been named as 2018 Perennial Plant of the Year. This is one of the best Flowering Onions that performs exceptionally well in our Deep South heat, and an additional superb trait is that it doesn't reseed and become a nuisance in the garden as many onions planted for ornament will do. This stunning Allium nutans hybrid comes from the Onion Man, Mark McDonough which was fittingly introduced in the new millennium year of 2000. From late May to late July here in zone 8, it puts up 12" stalks topped with 2" pinkish-purple flower heads. These will also keep up to a week as a cut flower and it also works well in a combination pot as well. The flowering period will last for up to two months. It flowers best in full sun with a well drained soil. Rabbits and deer avoid this plant like the plague.
