Red-flowering Passion Vine. This spectacular flowering vine is native to northern and central South America and it is evergreen in its native habitat in zone 10-12. But we have found it to be perfectly ground-hardy here in central zone 8. Here it will die back to the ground line during the winter, but it quickly grows back in the spring. I would advise to mulch the plant well in the winter in case of a several cold blast. It will start flowering in July and flower up until a heavy frost. Otherwise, it will do well as a container plant trained on trellis so that it can be moved inside during the winter. It climbs by tendrils which enables it to support itself quite easily, whether on a trellis, fence of larger plant. There are not many flowers as  spectacular as one will find on plants in this genus. Our parent plant is set in among a heavy thicket of larger mixed shrub, which naturally gives great ground protection to its root system.
