Evergreen Giant Liriope. The true identify of this selection of Liriope is a mystery to me. It has been banded about under several different names through the years, but now most authorities have pretty much settled on the above name. It will develop some of the longest leaves of the species, so long in fact that even the flower stalks will be hidden down in the foliage. This plant should be treated more for its foliage effect than for its flowers. And it is an impressive site when used in mass as seen by the photos below. It has the same lavender-purple flowers as L. muscari, but since the leaves are so tall, one can scarcely see them. This plant thrives in sun or shade, but in shade, its leaves grow much longer. I'm sure it would do well in zone 7b, but in a severe winter, one may experience some leaf burn. But the great attribute this selection has over the species is that its doesn't get the winter leaf spotting that is experienced with L. muscari. This makes me wonderful if it does have some "Ophiopogon" genes in it.

Zones 8-10.
