Duling's Variegated Myrtle-leaf Holly. Dave Duling found this selection as a branch sport of a male Ilex myrtifolia at Mercer Botanic Garden, Humble, TX. It would be a great companion with the female selection of Ilex myrtifolia that we offer. The size of the leaves from both selections are very similar. If this selection was a female, the berries against these variegated leaves would be stunning, but we can't have everything. I don't think that we have ever grown a variegated holly that has garnered more attention. We have had quite a time building up numbers on this selection because every plant nerd that sees it here at our nursery begs for me to sell them one. It grows very thick and billowy and makes for a spectacular show. This may be the first time that this selection has been offered commercially. It grows well in full sun to part shade.
