Gyokruyu Japanese Cedar. This cultivar of Japanese Cedar is a dense broad pyramid which has darker green needles than the species. It looks similar to 'Black Dragon' but has a much broader spread, probably maturing at 8-9'. But remember, nothing ever stops growing, so in time one may need some judicious pruning to keep it to the size desired. This cultivar reminds me of a pyramidal 'Globosa Nana'. When one wants the form and effect of Cryptomeria, but not the space that it requires, then this is the plant for you. It is a wonderful replica of the species, but to a smaller scale. It does well in full sun to part shade to even full shade and likes a well drained soil. It does not "bronze" in the winter like some cultivars, but stays a rich green.
